The Outeniqua Tjoe-Choo steam train from George to Knysna is highly recommended and a tourist favourite. Enjoy the scenic train ride in this old steam engine while taking in the magnificent sights and sounds of George. Once you have arrived in Knysna, you can go shopping at the Knysna waterfront or take a cruise on the Knysna Featherbed, an exhilarating journey to where the lagoon meets the ocean.
Go on a 4x4 game drive to the Botlierskop Private Game Reserve and observe Rhinos, Lions, Buffalos, Giraffes, rare black impala and many more. This game drive is one hour long and just 15 minutes away from Melkhoutkloof Guest House.
You can take a quick tour of Mossel Bay during your Garden Route vacation. There you will find The Bartholomeau Dias Museum Complex where you will learn interesting facts about the local history, the maritime museum, the Post Office Tree, Cape St. Blaize lighthouse which is one of the only 24 hour manned lighthouses on the South African coast, and the Khoi Village.
Do a Circular Route through Oudtshoorn via the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert and then back to Meiringspoort. In Oudtshoorn visit the popular Ostrich farm that includes Ostrich riding, the Crocodile and Wildlife Ranch where you can stroke some big cats, or delve into the depths of the earth in the Cango Caves.
For more adventure there is also guided 4x4 and horse trails through the Outeniqua Mountains. You can visit Hartenbos Museum and relive the days of the Great Trek. The Reins Nature Reserve has 3550 hectors of Proteas, Pincushions and Suikerbekkies, all indigenous flowers to South Africa. While there you can also enjoy a 4 hour tractor-trailer trip on the Reins Tortoise.
For those adrenalin seekers on their Garden Route vacation, pop around to Bungy Jumping South Africa at the Gouritz River Bridge or simply travel along the Seven Passes Road from George to Knysna which runs through the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountain.
